Smoked Tofu Review

Is Sunrise Soyganic's Natural Smoky Bean Curd Worth Buying?

© Jill Harris

Nutritious smoked tofu is the easiest and most delicious way to eat extra-firm tofu. Sunrise Soya's natural smoking process makes their smoked tofu simple and tasty.

Tofu is the master of disguise – it can disappear into desserts, take centre stage as a main dish or masquerade as meat. Despite tofu’s potential for change, often a simple embellishment is all it needs.

Simple, smoky flavour is the perfect embellishment for hearty, extra-firm tofu. Soyganic Smoked Tofu is made in British Columbia, Canada, from four simple ingredients (water, organic soybeans, nigari [magnesium chloride] and sea salt). Perfect for vegetarins and vegans, Smoked Tofu is straight-forward and extremely satisfying.

Smoked Tofu Taste

Smoked tofu is maybe a touch too salty, but is otherwise rich and satisfying. For those who miss bacon, smoked tofu might be the closest vegan taste to it.

Unlike other smoked tofu products, Sunrise Soyganic Smoked Tofu is actually smoked; not just doused in artificial liquid smoke. The result is a smoky-flavour infused throughout the product – not just sitting on the surface.

Cooking with Smoked Tofu

Smoked tofu is versatile and is a great starter tofu for people who are scared to try it. Smoked tofu has a firm, meaty texture that gets even better if the tofu is frozen and then defrosted for use. Only mildly beany, it is much less offensive than other textures of tofu and is foolproof to use.

Here are some preparation tips and ideas for cooking with smoked tofu:

  • Freeze the tofu for easy storage. When defrosted, it has a more chewy and meaty texture
  • Smoked tofu is firm – cut it into cubes for kebabs or cutlets for barbecuing. It will hold its shape better than other tofu products. And there is no messy marinade to drip off.
  • Slice and fry smoked tofu to stand in for bacon in BLT sandwiches

Smoked Tofu Nutrition

Soyganic Smoked Tofu comes in a 225 gram package (about 10 ounces) by weight, which translates into two very generous servings. It packs a protein punch with 25 grams per serving (more than a quarter of the recommended daily intake) and only 170 calories.

Unlike marinated tofu (which contains sugary sauces), smoked tofu relies on its cooking process for flavour. While it is high in salt (580 mg), it is low in carbohydrates (8 grams) and very low in sugar (1 gram).

Per serving, smoked tofu contains:

  • 170 calories
  • 4 grams fat (0.5 grams of which are saturated)
  • Carbohydrates: 8 grams
  • Fibre: 3 grams
  • Sugars: 1 gram
  • Protein: 25 grams
  • Calcium: 10% daily value, or 100 mg
  • Iron: 25% daily value, or 4.5 mg
  • Sodium: 580 mg

The Bottom Line

Soyganic Smoked Tofu is about as perfect as savoury tofu gets – simple, nutritious and versatile.

Thank you for the great info on Smoked Tofu. You may have noticed that it is out of stock in many locations. Soya Nova Tofu,(we manufacture Soyganic Smoked Tofu for Sunrise) is moving, and expanding our production facilities. There should be Smoked Tofu in the stores in August 08. You can get it at many stores in BC, as either Soya Nova, West Coast Smoked Tofu, or Pete's Soyganic Smoked Tofu. The product is made from certified organic, non GMO, soy beans, water, and Nigari.(natural coagulant) It contains no fat, or cholesterol, and packs a real protien punch. The real cool thing is that it tastes great. Something Tofu was never famous for. I enjoy it shredded on a pizza, or cut up and added to an omelet for breakfast.
