Being vegan doesn't have to mean missing out on frozen summer fare; there are plenty of options to cool off with, even on the sunniest of days.
Summer means frozen desserts. From ice cream to frozen yogurt and popsicles to creamsicles, there are many things to choose from, if you are vegetarian—but vegans never fear! From the local supermarket to the hip health food store on the corner, there are many different varieties of frozen treats available for vegans to cool down with this summer. Vegan Ice CreamIf creamy, swirled ice cream topping a crispy waffle cone doesn't take anyone back to their childhood, what will? Vegan ice cream is obtainable in most places and there are several varieties.
And of course, there is always homemade ice cream! Homemade ice cream can also be created using different non-dairy milks and flavors, so try something new this summer! Maybe a nice prickly-pear ice cream with soy milk? Frozen FruitNeed an icy treat but don't have access to a place to buy your favorite vegan ice cream? Freezing fruit is an excellent way to get a burst of sweetness along with a nice cool chill. Try a few frozen cherries or even some frozen peaches for a fresh and healthy cool treat. PopsiclesThere are are quite a few different popsicle varieties suitable for vegans. If sugar and healthy-value is a concern, try some organic, all fruit popsicles at a local health food store. When buying popsicles from a store, just be sure to read the ingredients for any hidden animal ingredients, such as carmine (used for red coloring). Homemade popsicles are also fun and tasty. Just find a popsicle mold and pour in a favorite fruit juice, or even a smoothie mixture to re-freeze for a creamy treat. Check out this article for more ideas on homemade popsicles. Shaved Ice and Snow ConesShaved ice and snow cones are generally good vegan options when there aren't many others. Like popsicles, it would be a good idea to ask about ingredients, mainly for the use of carmine as a coloring agent. Shaved ice and snow cones can easily be made at home with the use of a snow cone or shaved ice machine. Unlike popsicles and ice creams, however, the shaved ice machine will come with syrup.
